A metropolitan region, also called an ecclesiastical province, is one of the basic structures of the Catholic Church with traditional hierarchical structures. In general, a Metropolitan region consists of several dioceses, one of them being the archdiocese, headed by a metropolitan bishop. Kenya has four Metropolitan regions, based on the four archdioceses, namely Nairobi, Nyeri, Kisumu and Mombasa.
